Notes from ACOF meeting on 4/13/08

Discussed the possibility of the Habitat focus day across Ankeny. Ivan reported that the Holy Trinity pastor was interested in participating in the focus day for Habitat Humanity. AFUMC can participate also.

Nancy from Resurection Lutheran reported on two different Habitat initiatives:

  • on June 29th and 30th they will focus on Habitat. They will use the monthly giving calendar.
  • RLC will also host a Summerfest booth on their church property. They will team up with HTLC to sell ice cream and home-baked desserts. Proceeds will go to Habitat.
    • An idea was posed that we could build a shed in conjunction with the booth to attract attention.
    • Other churches could help provide desserts, youth to help build, and/or people to staff the booth

Discussed inclusion of a float in the Summerfest parade. If we do this, it would be good to have a half-completed shed to put on the float.

Discussed the Dinner and Auction. General agreement was to try to skip the event this year for the following reasons:

  • the event requires heroic efforts on the part of a few people. This just isn’t a sustainable long-term strategy for fund raising.
  • Proceeds have been diminishing. Ankeny is over saturated with auction-style fund raising events.
  • Donors to the auction are getting hit from all sides. They are less likely to give good items.
  • This is a good time to see what success we can have with smaller scale and individual church efforts.

In kind donations. This is still a great revenue source we each need to pursue. Anyone who has contacts in their churches in the building professions should look for in kind donations of either time or materials. Areas where this would help: heating/cooling, concrete work, electrical, plumbing, dry wall, building materials, etc. So far, per Ivan, ACOF has the furnace, air conditioner, and installation lined up.

Barney reported that Roger Routh is working on the short informational video. Roger will “interview” several of us from the ACOF team as he puts together the video. We also plan to include testimony from a partner family.

The next meeting of the Ankeny Circle of Faith is scheduled for May 18th at 3:30 at OLIH.
